Brett Dodson, Director of Bands

 

Brett Dodson is the Director of Bands at Kilmer Middle School, where he instructs three concert bands, a percussion class, and the beginning band class. He received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from James Madison University and Masters Degree in Trumpet Performance from Bowling Green State University, where he served as a graduate assistant with the university band program.

Previously, Mr. Dodson taught as the Assistant Band Director at Seguin High School in Seguin, TX, outside of San Antonio. Under his direction, his students received Superior Ratings at State Concert and Marching Festivals, the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition, and South Padre Island Music Festivals. While at Seguin, Mr. Dodson also served as the beginning trumpet instructor for all sixth grade students in the district and is especially proud of those students’ achievements.

An accomplished trumpeter, Mr. Dodson served as a principal player and section leader in the JMU Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Band, and Marching Royal Dukes. While studying at Bowling Green, he served in the same capacity for the BGSU Wind Symphony and Philharmonia. In addition to his collegiate playing, Mr. Dodson has been employed as a trumpeter with The Disneyland Resort All-American College Band, the Busch Gardens Starlight Jazz Orchestra, the Heritage Repertory Theater, and the Adrian Symphony Orchestra. In the Metro DC area, he performs with the Fairfax Wind Symphony and Capital Winds. Mr. Dodson has a special interest in performing on the cornet in British-style brass bands and plays regularly with the Massanutten Brass Band in Harrisonburg, VA.

Deidra Denson, Assistant Director of Bands

Deidra Denson graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s degree in Bassoon Performance and a Master’s degree in Music Teaching.  While at Oberlin, Ms. Denson performed with the Bläserquintett woodwind quintet during its Music from Oberlin tour, and was awarded two contrabassoon fellowships to attend the Aspen Music Festival.  She played for several years with the Washington Bach Sinfonia, Mount Vernon Orchestra, Canton (OH) Symphony, Ashland (OH) Symphony Orchestra, and the Potomac Winds woodwind quintet. During her time with Potomac Winds, the ensemble performed on the Sunday Concert Series at the Phillips Collection.

 

Ms. Denson began her teaching career in Potsdam, New York, teaching grades 7-12. She began her tenure in Fairfax County in 1989 when she became director of bands at Poe Middle School. She later held the same position at Stone Middle School. Recognized several times as a distinguished educator in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, her bands consistently received superior ratings at the VBODA district band festivals and first place and grand champion awards at various regional competitions.

 

Since 2003 Ms. Denson has been teaching elementary school band in Fairfax County and has been the woodwind specialist and assistant director of bands at Kilmer Middle School.
