Vienna Band Camp
For over 30 years, the Vienna Band Camp has been providing students in and around the Vienna area with a quality of summer music instruction that is unmatched by virtually any other program of its kind. Staffed by some of the finest professional musicians, private instructors, and band directors in the DC Metro area, the camp offers students a unique and intensely focused opportunity to make dramatic improvements on their instruments and as musicians during the summer. Participants consistently return to their school band programs equipped with skills and knowledge that help them succeed at the highest level.
The camp, open to beginning elementary students through rising 9th graders, is divided into four different ability tracks, allowing for instruction that is tuned to each individual student’s needs. Each track rotates daily through four class periods: a techniques class taught by a specialist on their specific instrument, a full band rehearsal, a sectional coaching taught by a specialist, and another full band rehearsal. The beginning band track is open to students with no music experience and is an ideal way to begin learning an instrument. The upper three levels of concert band are open to students with one or more years in band and provide a musical experience that is appropriately challenging even for the most accomplished rising 9th graders.
The start of camp is typically the first full week after Fairfax County Schools adjourn for the summer. It runs weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with a holiday for the 4th of July. Although students are encouraged to attend the entire camp in order to maximize their improvement, it is acceptable to miss portions of camp due to previously planned family vacations and activities (prorated refunds are not given for days not in attendance). Due to the large number of participants each summer, the cost of the full four weeks is typically around $200.
The 2011 Vienna Band Camp is scheduled to run June 27 through July 21 at McLean High School. To participate, complete the registration form.
