Nick, Tuba

Nick, Tuba

Nick, 13, plays tuba in the Kilmer Symphonic Band, in which he has served as the first chair player since arriving at Kilmer as a 7th grader. His impressive technical facility and tone provide a mature foundation to the band’s sound that is rarely found in middle school ensembles.

Nick began his musical study at Wolftrap Elementary on the tuba in 5th grade. Appreciating the value of quality private instruction, Nick started lessons with Mr. Gene Duman the same year and quickly became one of the strongest players in the Wolftrap program. By the end of his elementary band experience, Nick had firmly established his talents, receiving the 6th Grade Band Award and earning a Superior Rating at Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Truly a diverse musician, Nick is an accomplished guitarist and has performed with the Vienna School of Rock on their Beatles White Album, Nirvana and Southern Rock shows. His experience with rock bands mirrors his musical taste. Nick admits that he is not a fan of pop music, preferring classic artists like The Who and The Clash – particularly their songs My Generation and (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais.
When asked about why he likes studying music and participating in band, Nick points to the educational opportunities and life skills gained from his involvement. He appreciates the results of blending his talents with those of his peers in order to produce a great sounding musical product. Nick also notes the patience and determination necessary (both individually and as a team) to be successful as a musician or ensemble and the benefits this brings to other aspects of his life.

Even though Nick currently does not know his plans for life, he certainly understands the work ethic and education necessary to bring him success. His musical abilities, strong academic record, and athletic achievements will open up many doors in the future; however, perhaps his greatest quality, and one of the reasons he is such an accomplished musician, is Nick’s willingness to be a team player and contribute his talents in any way that will help his friends and classmates.
